Le differenti dimensioni di questo ragno tra maschio e femmina sono molto evidenti, infatti il maschio varia dai due ai quattro millimetri, la femmina dai sette ai dieci millimetri. Si accoppiano tra fine Maggio e inizio Luglio e i piccoli nascono all'incirca venti giorni dopo la deposizione delle uova. Le femmine thomisidae gravide, sembrano delle palline con le zampe (immaginate di gonfiare una Piramide) con una piccola testa. Le due protuberanze spariscono per diventare puntini gialli o viola. Dalla gravidanza la femmina depone un centinaio di uova in una sacca realizzata con le sue secrezioni seriche dove i “feti”completano lo sviluppo. Le mamme rimangono per tutto il tempo vicino al nido. Il Thomisus onustus, è totalmente innocuo per l'uomo in quanto i loro cheliceri sono troppo piccoli per poter minimamente scalfire la nostra pelle! A differenza di altri ragni che possiedono cheliceri dentati, i thomisidae devono digerire esternamente la preda iniettandole gli enzimi digestivi nel corpo e bevendo il “brodo” ottenuto dalla lisi dei tessuti interni della sua preda. La loro struttura fisica è una macchina perfetta per la caccia ad agguato, infatti sono dotati di otto zampe di dimensioni molto diverse. La doppia coppia di arti posteriori sono corte ma robuste e servono per reggere il peso del corpo e mantenersi agganciati al fiore e foglia. Possiedono lunghi uncini che si chiudono a tenaglia con grande velocità per poter afferrare la preda. Oltre alla particolare bellezza progettuale, la caratteristica notevole del ragno Thomisus onustus è quella di poter cambiare colore nel tempo. Per questi ragni è di particolare importanza essere difficili da identificare, in primis da parte delle loro prede principali che sono gli Imenotteri come Api e Bombi, ma anche da parte dei loro predatori più attivi ovvero gli uccelli. Il problema si risolve riuscendo ad adeguare il colore a quello del fiore su cui si appostano: dato che la visione a colori degli uccelli comprende lo spettro dall'ultravioletto al rosso, mentre quella degli Imenotteri predati è più sensibile all'ultravioletto ed arriva al blu – verde, è chiaro che il Thomisus onustus deve trovare un compromesso tra queste due sensibilità visive. Di solito il ragno riesce a soddisfare entrambe le esigenze anche se in taluni casi viene privilegiata il mimetismo rispetto alla preda: ciò fa crescere leggermente le possibilità di essere predati, ma aumenta in modo significativo le possibilità di catturare Imenotteri. Il Thomisus onustus è un vero campione: riesce a ridurre perfettamente il suo contrasto cromatico anche su fiori di altro colore. Dobbiamo ricordare che il colore dei ragni è determinato da due fenomeni distinti: il primo è dato dalla pigmentazione (colore intrinseco di determinati composti chimici), il secondo dalla riflessione selettiva di certe lunghezze d'onda (per esempio, il giallo dei petali di un fiore è dato dal fatto che tali petali hanno assorbito tutte le lunghezze d'onda dell'arcobaleno eccetto il giallo che viene riflesso). In questo ragno, la variazione cromatica può variare dal giallo, al bianco a gradazione di violetto e adotta l'arte di illudere e di giocare d'astuzia, diventando molto abile nel camuffamento per riuscire a confondersi con l'ambiente e i fiori in cui vivono. Questa forma di mimetismo si chiama: mimetismo criptico, in altre parole è la capacità di essere invisibile sia ai predatori che alle prede. Il criptismo per essere efficace deve essere associato ad un particolare comportamento, il ragno deve rimanere immobile o muoversi molto lentamente. Questi ragni vivono principalmente su fiori o comunque sulle parti più alte delle piante. Non tessono ragnatele ma cacciano appostati sui fiori, a volte nascosti fra i petali, a volte addirittura aspettano al centro del fiore. La tecnica di caccia è sempre la stessa: attendono immobili finchè un insetto non arriva alla portata delle loro zampe, poi con uno scatto fulmineo afferrano e mordono la preda che resta paralizzata all'istante.
