Fanno parte di un programma di ripopolamento iniziato nel 1999, dopo un assurdo sterminio di questi bellissimi animali. I Grifoni o Avvoltoi Europei (Gyps fulvus) sono i padroni indiscussi dei cieli del più grande Canyon d'Europa, il Verdon (Francia). Grazie al Importante lavoro degli esperti del parco del Verdon, i grandi carnivori sono quasi totalmente autosufficienti dal punto di vista alimentare. Ricordo che erano presenti in numeri considerevoli anche in Italia, però sterminati . Tali uccelli sono importantissimi per la catena alimentare, perché mangiano velocemente le carcasse degli animali evitando la loro decomposizione e il relativo apporto batterico che un corpo in decomposizione può portare. Essi sono dei grandi e importanti spazzini della natura. Il Grifone si differenziano dal resto degli avvoltoi, come quelli che popolano l' America, per le loro grandi dimensioni. Hanno un'apertura alare di 2,8 metri, un altezza di circa 1 mt ed un peso di circa 9 kg. Essi individuano il proprio cibo, prevalentemente carcasse, unicamente utilizzando la vista e non il suo olfatto e vista come fanno i suoi lontani cugini che popolano i canyon americani. Il volo: spesso in maniera circolare ad ali stese e ferme, avviene quasi unicamente sfruttando le correnti ascensionali, partendo da un punto intermedio delle pareti rocciose dove hanno il nido, risalgono la valle per vedere eventuali prede anche a distanze ragguardevoli. Durante il volo è possibile vedere la sua maestosità e grandezza dell' apertura alare che termina con delle lunghe “dita” (primarie digidali) molto ben distanziate fra loro. Il nome di GRIFONE, deriva dal greco, in seguito traslato nella parola latina di gryfus, identifica una creatura leggendaria che simboleggia la perfezione e la potenza con il corpo, la coda e le zampe posteriori da leone (animale dominante della terra) e la testa, le ali e gli artigli anteriori di un'aquila (animale dominante del cielo). Tale figura spesso veniva utilizzata come stemma araldico delle famiglie nobiliari.
