Nel 1376 Galeazzo II Visconti, co-Signore di Milano e signore di Pavia, acquistava dal pavese Lanterio de Cazabove un castello. L'attuale castello fu probabilmente ricostruito da Galeazzo II nella seconda metà del secolo XIV.Il nome "Zoioso" fu forse attribuito al castello per l'amenità del luogo e per la felicità che un tempo doveva recare il soggiorno in quella terra.
