L'hocco maggiore è un grande cracide delle Americhe Centrale e Merdionale, dal Messico all'Ecuador. È un uccello piuttosto diffidente che vive nelle foreste tropicali umide e si nutre principalmente di frutta ma anche di piccoli invertebrati. I maschi sono neri con parti inferiori bianche, una cresta ispida e una caratteristica protuberanza sferica giallo brillante sul becco. Attualmente l'cocco maggiore è in notevole declino a causa della perdita dell'habitat e della caccia. La specie è perciò compresa nella lista rossa IUCN, classificata come “vulnerabile”. Laguna del Lagarto Eco-Lodge, Provincia di Alajuela, Giugno 2019.
