La nostra sistemazione sul Grappa era assai difficile perché eravamo ormai ridotti alle ultime propaggini montane verso la pianura, tanto che il Gen. Conrad definì la nostra condizione: "quella di un naufrago aggrappato ad una tavola di salvataggio, per cui sarebbe bastato mozzargli le dita per vederlo annegare". Ma doveva fare i conti con la tenacia e il valore dei nostri soldati. Venne aperta nella viva roccia, al di sotto della cima del massiccio, la famosa galleria Vittorio Emanuele III. L'opera - vero capolavoro d'ingegneria militare - fu dotata di formidabili postazioni di artiglieria in caverna e di sbocchi offensivi per i contrattacchi. Il piano nemico prevedeva di sferrare con una armata - la 11a - l'attacco principale dagli Altopiani e dal Grappa per giungere, attraverso la piana di Vicenza, alle spalle delle nostre difese sul Piave che la 5 e 6 Armata austro - ungarica avrebbero attaccato frontalmente. LA BATTAGLIA DIFENSIVA
Durante la stasi invernale, la nostra organizzazione difensiva venne rafforzata con lavori in roccia, trinceramenti, postazioni e reticolati, in previsione di altri e più massicci attacchi.

La grande battaglia, dall'Astico al mare, che prese poi il nome di Battaglia del Solstizio, si accese nella notte del 15 giugno 1918. Fu improvvisa ma non inattesa dal nostro Comando Supremo che, avuto sentore delle intenzioni del nemico, riuscì a far scatenare un potente tiro di contropreparazione quasi contemporaneamente a quello di preparazione delle artiglierie nemiche, riducendone sensibilmente gli effetti distruttivi.

Ancora visibili nei pendii del Grappa i colpi delle granate.

Sul Grappa, nell'attacco che ne seguì, gli austriaci, protetti da una fitta nebbia, riuscirono ad irrompere nelle nostre prime linee del IX C.A. e raggiungere Col del Moins e Col Moschin, spingendo pattuglie fino al Ponte San Lorenzo.
Anche al centro, nel settore del VI C.A., il nemico attacca direttamente Cima Grappa da più direzioni; a destra, nel settore del XVIII Corpo, dopo ripetuti attacchi e contrattacchi, riesce ad affermarsi sulla linea Solarolo - Valderoa.
Le quattro località attaccate dagli austro - ungarici.

Ma la sua irruenza viene subito bloccata e nella giornata successiva, il 16 giugno, i nostri irresistibili contrattacchi riescono a ricacciare il nemico da quasi tutte le posizioni conquistate.
