L'Altopiano è tenuto saldamente e, malgrado la vicinanza del nemico che tenta sempre di forzare la Val di Brenta attraverso la Val Franzela, il senso di sicurezza della città è sempre vivo e serve da efficace stimolo morale ed è a sua volta avvalorato dallo spirito dei soldati e della truppa che vivono e passano nella città. Intanto la battaglia di caporetto ha posto la città a contatto col nemico per mezzo delle artiglierie. Non più incursioni soltanto; incominciano le granate. Il Grappa diventa caposaldo e punto di sutura tra il fronte degli Altopiani e del Piave. Conrad fin dal 22 novembre aveva stabilito l'assalto su Bassano.

Il nemico è lontano in linea d'aria poco più di 8 o 9 chilometri: i paesi a nord di Bassano sono bersaglio delle artiglierie. Dopo un tiro di avvicinamento come se le artiglierie nemiche gradualmente cercassero il punto, il 21 dicembre la prima granata cade su Bassano.




E' incominciata insieme con l'epica battaglia d'arresto del Grappa, la prova più grave e più eroica per Bassano. Il destino di questi due nomi è ora unito: avviene la sintesi di due fortune, il patire e il reagire insieme; è comunque la forza di resistenza, di volontà di vittoria. Il ritmo delle granate cade continuamente sulla città.




Oramai la vita civile della città non poteva conciliarsi con la sua posizione militare. Il 26 venne deciso lo sgombero e Bassano passa sotto la giurisdizione della IV armata a rendere più intimo e diretto il rapporto di resistenza con i suoi difensori. Il nemico era in vista di Bassano.




Ci si incomincia a preoccupare della pianura e Bassano diventa testa di ponte della “linea delle colline”. L'esodo della popolazione è iniziato. Le granate cadono sempre numerosissime; ogni giorno la città è segnata da nuove rovine, da nuovi squarci nell'armonico tessuto delle sue case.




Le incursioni aeree si ripetono con insolita frequenza. Il piano nemico infatti tende a fiaccare la resistenza interna, a sminuire lo spirito di resistenza, a creare uno stato d'animo e di panico nel cuore vitale, che era nella condizione di subire nel vivo dei suoi cittadini nei pericoli della guerra.




La città venne ridotta alla pura urbs; puro obiettivo di guerra per il nemico che contava senz'altro su di essa e mirava solo ad essa, quale prima città da occupare nella pianura. E tanto più si accaniva in quanto era vicinissimo ad essa; la poteva vedere nella sua tranquilla veste, in una specie di serenità che il paesaggio confortava.
