Galleria Umberto I Napoli. All rights reserved. Costruita in appena tre anni tra il 1887 e 1890, proprio mentre a Parigi Eiffel progettava e costruiva la sua famosa Torre Eiffel, la Galleria Umberto colpisce ancora oggi per maestosità, eleganza e complessità della struttura. Fu costruita al seguito di una forte epidemia di colera che portò ad una bonifica e sventramento dei quartieri sovraffollati del Pendino, Porto, Mercato e Vicaria, per far posto alla Galleria progettata dall'ingegnere Emanuele Rocco. Il suo progetto prevedeva la costruzione di quattro ampi edifici, collegati ed impreziositi da una grande galleria in vetro e ferro dell'ingegner Paolo Boubèe con al centro una Cupola, e con quattro diversi ingressi. Inaugurata nel 1892 dal sindaco Nicola Amore, divenne presto il centro mondano della città. La costruzione della Galleria fu voluta non solo per una funzione commerciale e sociale, ma anche monumentale (tenendo in considerazione l'importanza dei monumenti nelle vicinanze). Inoltre grazie alla costruzione della Galleria si permetteva di dare un riparo pubblico alle persone durante le intemperie, un luogo che potesse anche intrattenere così i cittadini con negozi, botteghe e quant'altro si trovava al suo interno.
