Tra gli edifici del complesso medievale all'interno della piazza, il più noto è la pieve romanica di San Giorgio. Considerata dagli specialisti come uno dei migliori esempi dello stile architettonico romanico piacentino, è citata in due pergamene custodite nell'archivio parrocchiale, datate rispettivamente nel 1223 e nel 1284, e racchiude in sé numerosi simbolismi e altrettanti misteri. Uno di questi – e forse il più importante – riguarda proprio il santo a cui la chiesa è dedicata: San Giorgio, prode cavaliere crociato che anche l'Inghilterra ha scelto come il proprio Santo Patrono. Nella parte alta dell'abside centrale vi è un affresco raffigurante il leggendario gesto per cui il santo guerriero viene ricordato, ossia l'atto di uccidere un drago per liberare la principessa. Nel dipinto la giubba crociata di San Giorgio e il colpo di spada che sta per sferrare, richiamano il dipinto San Giorgio libera la principessa dal drago di Bartolomeo e Jacopino da Reggio, oggi conservato nella cattedrale di Fidenza. A differenza di esso, però, viene messa in evidenza la lancia spezzata sul terreno e l'eroica impresa si scosta dall'iconografia tradizionale poiché si svolge in un ambiente interno, racchiuso dall'architettura dell'abside, caratterizzata da nicchie sostenute tra travature che conferiscono profondità all'immagine .
