La "Macchina di Santa Rosa" è il baldacchino trionfale che innalza al di sopra dei tetti di Viterbo la statua di Santa Rosa, patrona della città. Una torre alta circa trenta metri, cinquanta quintali di peso, illuminata dalla luce viva di tante fiammelle, portata a spalla da oltre cento coraggiosi uomini lungo un difficile percorso di oltre un chilometro. È la Macchina dedicata a S. Rosa da Viterbo, che la sera del 3 settembre sfila per le vie del centro storico, rinnovando il tradizionale evento, unico al mondo, lo stesso ormai da più di settecentocinquanta anni, al quale hanno assistito in passato personaggi famosi, tra cui Papa Wojtila, il Principe Carlo d'Inghilterra, presidenti del consiglio, ministri e sottosegretari, ma anche attori, giornalisti, conduttori e autori televisivi. È uno spettacolo ricco di emozioni e suggestioni, al quale ogni anno assistono decine di migliaia di persone provenienti da ogni dove, stipate lungo il percorso della Macchina, che gridano, piangono, pregano, incitano i Facchini nella loro straordinaria prova di forza e fede. La tradizione del Trasporto della Macchina di S. Rosa nasce il 4 settembre del 1258, data in cui avvenne, per volontà di Papa Alessandro IV, la solenne traslazione del corpo intatto della Santa Viterbese dalla modesta sepoltura della fossa comune di S. Maria del Poggio al Monastero della Clarisse, che poi prese il nome di colei che i Viterbesi chiamano “la Santa Bambina”, morta a soli 18 anni, nel marzo 1251.
