La processione di Gubbio gode di una particolare considerazione per la secolarità della tradizione e la profonda spiritualità che la pervade. La sua origine risale ai movimenti laici penitenziali del sec. XIII che, a Gubbio, si articolarono in confraternite ed ebbero un seguito numeroso. Ancora oggi, infatti, la Processione è curata dalla Confraternita della Chiesa di Santa Croce della Foce. Si tratta di una rappresentazione della Passione: i "Sacconi" (dal nome dell'antica divisa della Confraternita) mostrano i simboli della Passione e precedono le statue del Cristo Morto e della Madonna Addolorata. La processione, che percorre le strade cittadine illuminate dalla luce delle torce e fiaccole, è accompagnata da due cori che cantano il Miserere, un canto penitenziale a più voci tramandato oralmente.
