Edificato intorno al 123 d.C. Castel Sant'Angelo nasce come sepolcro per l'imperatore Adriano e la sua famiglia. Il suo destino è unico: il Castello attraverso trasformazioni e sviluppi, riesce a riscattare una soluzione di continuità per quasi venti secoli, al contrario di altri monumenti dell'antica Roma che, vengono ridotti in rovina, o riciclati in più moderni edifici. Attraverso i secoli, Castel Sant'Angelo si trasforma da: monumento funerario ad avamposto fortificato, da oscuro e terribile carcere a splendida dimora rinascimentale che vede attivo tra le sue mura Michelangelo, da prigione risorgimentale a museo, Castel Sant'Angelo incarna nei solenni spazi romani, nelle possenti mura, nelle fastose sale affrescate, le vicende della Città Eterna dove passato e presente appaiono indissolubilmente legati.
