PISA: MIRACOLI DI ARCHITETTURA Si pensa che il nome “Piazza dei Miracoli” derivi dal fatto che tutti i monumenti della piazza, oltre la Torre, pendano leggermente. In realtà fu Gabriele D'Annunzio che, nel romanzo “Forse che sì, forse che no”, scrisse del Prato dei Miracoli che divenne poi Campo dei Miracoli e infine Piazza dei Miracoli, che accoglie gli edifici in cui, si celebrano i momenti principali dell'esistenza umana: la nascita, la vita e la morte. IL BATTISTERO dedicato a San Giovanni Battista è il più grande d'Italia, con una circonferenza di 107,24 metri e un'altezza di 54 metri e 86 centimetri. Al suo interno: sculture come il pulpito, la fonte battesimale e la scultura bronzea di San Giovanni Battista. All'interno c'è un'eco singolare dovuto all'acustica eccezionale che rende questo monumento un vero e proprio “strumento musicale”, grazie alla sua altezza e alla forma e struttura della cupola. La Cattedrale Al centro della Piazza, la Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. Costruita in stile romanico pisano con influenze bizantine e arabe, rappresenta un nuovo modello di chiesa per l'architettura policroma e l'uso del loggiato. La facciata in marmo bianco e grigio è ricca di dettagli e il suo interno in marmo bianco e nero si sposa con il soffitto ricoperto da cassettoni in legno dorato. Notevoli, l'abside con il mosaico di Cimabue e il pergamo di Giovanni Pisano, considerato il capolavoro del gotico italiano, e la tomba dell'imperatore Enrico VII di Lussemburgo, collocata dietro l'altare maggiore, nell'abside. La scelta del luogo era diretta a dimostrare la devozione dei Pisani ghibellini per l'Imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero. La Torre Pendente Simbolo della città e icona dell'Italia nel mondo. Nasce in realtà come campanile separato dalla Cattedrale. Fin dall'inizio della sua costruzione (1173) emersero i primi problemi. La pendenza fu evidente soprattutto quando si arrivò a costruire il terzo anello. Da quel momento, gli anelli successivi furono costruiti con piani leggermente storti per controbilanciare la pendenza. Dall'alto della Torre, che è stata chiusa al pubblico per molti anni a causa di delicati lavori di consolidamento, si gode di uno spettacolare panorama a 360° sulla città e i dintorni. La fatica nel salire i 294 gradini, verrà ampiamente ripagata. Il Camposanto monumentale nasce come cimitero della Cattedrale per ospitare le sepolture dei pisani più illustri. È un luogo sacro da quando i Pisani, di ritorno dalla Crociata in Terra Santa, vi trasportarono la terra portata da Gerusalemme. Dal XVI secolo, fu oggetto di un processo di “musealizzazione” con l'apposizione di iscrizioni romane sulle pareti e altre preziose testimonianze della storia cittadina, che lo rendono una sorta di Pantheon pisano.
