La facciata di questo piccolo Oratorio è di stile romanico-gotico, molto simile all'interno del loggiato che si trova nel Sacro Convento realizzato dai Maestri Comancini. Sull'arco ogivale troviamo una frase molto significativa scritta in latino: “Questo Oratorio fu stalla del bove e dell'asinello dove nacque San Francesco, specchio del Mondo“. San Francesco nacque da Pica e Pietro di Bernardone in Assisi nel 1182, però non si sa con precisione in quale mese e giorno (forse il 26 settembre), poiché nel Medio Evo si seguivano criteri diversi per il computo del tempo infatti anche la data della sua morte è variabile in quanto è morto al tramonto (forse alle ore 18) di sabato 3 ottobre 1226 all'età di 45 anni, ma per il computo del tempo allora in uso i giorni si facevano cominciare dal tramonto e quindi la morte sarebbe avvenuta all'inizio del 4 ottobre, giorno in cui il Cardinale Ugolino grande amico di San Francesco diventato papa a 85 anni con il nome di Gregorio IX ne stabilì la festa dopo aver decretato la sua canonizzazione. Cosi pure, di preciso, non si sa nulla o quasi a proposito dei primi momenti di vita del Santo. La tradizione popolare ha favoleggiato d'un vecchio pellegrino dal volto austero, che, arrivato ad Assisi poco prima che Pica mettesse al mondo Francesco, predicava nelle piazze la carità cristiana cominciando sempre con il saluto augurale “Pace e bene!”. Quando seppe che Pica, per quanto giunta al termine della gravidanza e già da tempo colta dalle doglie, non riusciva a partorire, si fece condurre da lei e le disse che tutto si sarebbe svolto presto e felicemente, se essa si fosse trasferita dalla sua ricca camera in una stalletta della casa. La donna, che era religiosa e probabilmente da poco reduce da un viaggio in Terra Santa, dove aveva visitato i luoghi della Natività, accettò il consiglio, pensando così di imitare la Madonna. Fu cosi che il Santo sarebbe nato sulla paglia in una piccola ed umile stalla, proprio come Gesù. La piccola stalla, trasformata in cappella (a partire dal XIII secolo) con il nome di “S. Francescuccio” o di “S. Francesco Piccolino“, esiste tuttora vicino alla piazza centrale, nel vicolo dello Spirito Santo. Il portone gotico fu aggiunto nel 1281. Pare che questa cappella sia stata allestita verso la metà del '200, poco dopo la morte del Santo, dal suo nipote di nome Piccardo d'Angelo, proprietario di tutta la casa e che la stessa sia stata funzionante per tutto il Medio Evo, ciò attestato da poche e malridotte tracce di affreschi del 1300 sui muri anneriti dal tempo. Piccardo per 29 anni fu un penitente della Basilica di San Francesco, ed è anche per questo che l'Oratorio di San Francesco passerà poi in dono al Sacro Convento. L'interno dell'oratorio è caratterizzato da una volta in pietra rustica, molto simile a quella della Porziuncola e di San Damiano, e negli anni le pareti vennero rivestite da affreschi, mentre nel 1926 vennero riportate alle origini.
