Era un po' che mio figlio desiderava salire sul ghiacciaio a cercare le bianche, ma io ho sempre glissato perché la gira è lunga e le possibilità fotografiche sempre complicate. Questa volta però, con la muta che è quasi ultimata e la neve presente solo sopra i 3000m, ho deciso di accontentarlo con il presentimento che forse, proprio lassù, le avremmo incontrate le pernici. Dopo la colazione, la preparazione dell'attrezzatura e il breve trasferimento in auto, ci ritroviamo alle prime luci dell'alba al cospetto delle nostre montagne, infreddoliti quanto pronti ad affrontare quel benedetto dislivello che da sempre separa la quotidianità dei valligiani dalla selvaggia natura delle pernici. Dopo circa un'ora e mezza le calde tonalità con cui l'autunno ha tinto la vallata, con i larici indorati, i sorbi infuocati, l'erba secca, polverosa e pregna degli odori della montagna, si stingono nelle più fredde sfumature di grigio delle pietraie. I ramponi tintinnano ancora legati sugli zaini quando raggiungiamo le pareti rocciose; seguendo un vecchio percorso dei "passeur" le aggiriamo e attraverso una cengia, già presa nel ghiaccio, accediamo finalmente alla conca nivale. Sopra tutto, un cielo blu che pare dover precipitare da un momento all'altro! Mentre siamo intenti a cambiare le maglie madide di sudore, il silenzio estremo della quota viene rotto dal "arr-arrrrrr" delle bianche. Basta uno sguardo per capire che ci siamo; che siamo pronti, che le pernici sono lì e che tutto dipende ancora una volta da noi.
