L'interno della cupola, che originariamente doveva essere rivestito di mosaici, fu per volere dei Medici affidato all'aretino Giorgio Vasari perché vi dipingesse il più vasto Giudizio universale della cristianità. Vasari iniziò l'affresco nel 1572, completò la fascia più alta, ma morì nel 1574, lasciando l'opera incompiuta. Fu il marchigiano Federico Zuccari a terminare l'opera alcuni anni dopo. Il risultato suscitò entusiasmi ma anche feroci critiche per aver deturpato con le pitture la purezza rinascimentale dell'architettura brunelleschiana. 700 figure dipinte di cui 248 angeli, 235 anime, 21 personificazioni, 102 personaggi religiosi, 35 dannati , 13 ritratti, 14 mostri, 23 putti e 12 animali: sono i numeri delle rappresentazioni che compongono il grande affresco della Cupola di Santa Maria del Fiore, un ciclo pittorico di oltre 3.600 mq eseguito da due degli artisti più rinomati di fine Cinquecento: Giorgio Vasari e Federico Zuccari.
