L'eruzione in Islanda di Fagradalsfjall sembra essere arrivata alla fine. L'eruzione è stata una delle occasioni fotografiche più straordinarie che il 2021 ci abbia portato. Vivendo in Islanda ho avuto la fortuna di assistere all'eruzione dal primo giorno ed ho potuto essere lì durante le fasi più spettacolari. Questa immagine è stata scattata durante una delle fasi più avvincenti dell'eruzione, verso la fine di Maggio. Dal punto di vista tecnico l'eruzione è stata un'occasione per mettere alla dura prova la gamma dinamica della mia fotocamera! Sebbene la D850 abbia ancora la migliore gamma dinamica di qualunque altra fotocamera 35mm (ad ISO64 secondo i test di dpreview insieme alla Z7II, con cui condivide il sensore) questa non era pienamente sufficiente per riprendere molte delle scene dell'eruzione. Durante le condizioni di luce più spettacolari (al crepuscolo) la luminosità della lava sovrastava in modo pazzesco qualunque luminosità ambientale. Spesso ho dovuto ricorrere a multi esposizioni, ma la cosa non era facile visto il movimento della lava e dei fumi delle esplosioni. Quindi quando leggo commenti di appassionati di fotografia che eventuali migliorie nella gamma dinamica sono inutili mi viene veramente da pensare che molte di queste persone non si siano mai confrontate con le situazioni di luce estrema che la fotografia di paesaggio richiede! A parte occasioni così particolari come le eruzioni vulcaniche anche albe, tramonti, aurore boreali possono creare situazioni che richiedono gamme dinamiche talmente estreme che nessuna fotocamera in commercio ancora riesce a gestire in modo perfetto, garantendo eccellenti qualità nelle ombre (soprattutto di terreni scuri di cui l'Islanda abbonda) recuperate di molti stop. Questo sebbene il progresso negli ultimi anni sia stato straordinario. Se guardo i file scattati con la mia vecchia Canon 5D MkIII e li confronto con quelli della D850 la differenza di qualità è veramente incredibile! :)
