Posto a dominio dell'omonimo borgo sopra una rupe rocciosa abitata sin dalla preistoria, Castel Tirolo è il poderoso maniero da cui trasse origine la potente e ricchissima casata dei Conti di Tirolo, che qui ebbero la loro residenza fino al 1420, anno in cui venne trasferita ad Innsbruck: ma tali furono nei secoli il prestigio e l'importanza assunti dal Castello, che non solo il vicino paese ma l'intera regione finirono per assumerne il nome! Dal centro di Merano il bellissimo e suggestivo percorso della Passeggiata Tappeiner conduce praticamenete alla porta della fortezza, al cui interno è possibile ammirare il cospicuo corredo del Museo storico culturale della Provincia di Bolzano ... il tutto consigliatissimo! ...
