Le prime notizie sulla Rocca Maggiore risalgono al 1174, quando fu ricostruita in seguito alla conquista di Assisi da parte delle truppe imperiali guidate da Cristiano di Magonza (1174); ma essa forse già esisteva in epoca longobarda. E' quindi probabile che – sui resti di una fortificazione preesistente – la Rocca sia stata ricostruita dagli Svevi, come castello feudale: si narra anche che Federico di Svevia – il futuro imperatore Federico II – vi abbia soggiornato in gioventù, ospite di Corrado Lutzen. La Rocca si staglia sul colle che sovrasta Assisi: al di sopra delle sue mura spicca il Maschio, da cui si gode uno stupendo panorama della città e della Valle Umbra, da Perugia a Spoleto. Sin dai tempi più antichi, il luogo ove sorge la fortezza era considerato sacro ed essenziale alla difesa dell'abitato. Nel 1198 il castello fu distrutto a seguito di una rivolta popolare per impedire che cadesse nelle mani di un governatore pontificio: non a torto, gli assisani vedevano in esso un simbolo dell'oppressione imperiale. La Rocca fu ricostruita nel 1365 dal cardinale Egidio Albornoz (allora impegnato nella sottomissione delle principali città della penisola) come punto di avvistamento: ne uscì un tipico esempio di architettura militare medievale. Da allora, la Rocca fu protagonista di ogni tentativo di conquista nell'alternarsi al governo della città dei vari signori ed il suo ruolo difensivo accrebbe nel tempo con modifiche nella struttura e con la costruzione di torri e bastioni. Successivamente all'Albornoz, la Rocca fu ampliata e modificata da Biordo Michelotti (1395-98), dal Piccinino (1458), da Pio II (1460), da Sisto IV (1478), da Paolo III (1535) ed assunse un aspetto davvero imponente .È tradizione che la vetta del colle fosse occupata da una acropoli sin dall'epoca più antica, ma che fosse devastata nel 545 dal re goto Totila. Nel '600, la Rocca fu completamente abbandonata per rimanere quasi intatta fino al nostro secolo. La fortezza voluta dall'Albornoz fu più volte ampliata con l'aggiunta di bastioni, ma venne devastata dalla popolazione in seguito all'unità d'Italia (1859). Oggi è aperta ai sempre più numerosi visitatori; dalle sue torri si offre un panorama tra i più ampi e suggestivi di tutta l'Umbria: Assisi raccolta ai suoi piedi, la splendida Valle Umbra. I suggestivi saloni ospitano ricostruzioni tematiche ispirate alla vita medioevale.
