In Liguria, lungo le coste del comune di Noli, è nato l'Orto di Nemo, meglio conosciuto come “Nemo's Garden“: qui basilico e lattuga crescono a pochi metri di profondità. L'idea è di Sergio Gamberini, presidente di Ocean Reef Group, il quale ha capito che sott'acqua ci sono condizioni molto favorevoli all'agricoltura: temperatura costante, umidità sufficientemente alta, insetti e parassiti assenti motivo per cui si possono evitare pesticidi. Si coltiverà grazie alle biosfere in pvc trasparente, gonfiate con aria compressa e ancorate al fondale senza creare alcun impatto negativo su di esso. Anzi, al contrario, granchi e polpi hanno fatto visita alle biosfere senza danneggiarne il raccolto. I cavallucci marini al di sotto di esse sono una presenza costante.
