Questa specie si è salvata sostanzialmente grazie all'ecoturismo.
In Uganda ci sono 19 famiglie abituate alla presenza dell'uomo, il processo di interazione è molto lungo e non tutte le famiglie si 'adattano' alla presenza della nostra specie. Inizialmente sono i 'Tracciatori' che iniziano a 'vivere' al loro fianco...anche per anni.
Per visitare una famiglia è necessario richiedere il permesso (anche 1 anno prima), il cui ricavato sarà devoluto per la salvaguardia della specie e per i costi di gestione del Parco (in questo caso Bwindi). Prima del Gorilla Tracking si effettua un briefing per capire come e quanto si potrà interagire con la famiglia. Il Trekking può durare 1 ora o 8 ore (casi ormai rari) e una volta raggiunti i Gorilla si potrà stare con loro al massimo 1 ora. Quindi ogni famiglia sarà 'disturbata' per 1 ora al giorno...anche se devo ammettere che le famiglie che abbiamo visitato noi non sembravano affatto disturbate, anzi.
'Purtroppo' questa era l'unica soluzione per evitare l'estinzione di questa specie.
