Nelson Piquet Souto Maior… nato a Rio de Janeiro nel 1952… iniziò a gareggiare con i kart a 14 anni poi… dopo varie esperienze in Formula Super Vee, nella Formula 3 Europea e in quella del Campionato Inglese… approdò in Formula 1 nel 1978 alla guida di una Ensign motorizzata Ford. In seguito… dopo aver guidato una Mc Laren per poche gare… approdò alla Brabham dove rimase fino al 1985 vincendo i Campionati del Mondo negli anni 1981 e 1983. L'anno successivo sarà alla guida di una Williams motorizzata Honda con la quale vincerà il suo 3° Titolo Mondiale nel 1987. Negli anni successivi guiderà prima una Lotus e poi una Benetton con la quale chiuderà la sua carriera nella Massima Formula nel 1991 dopo aver disputato 207 Gran Premi vincendone 23 ed essere stato 60 volte sul podio. Dopo la Formula 1 si dedicò prima ad un paio di edizioni della 500 Miglia di Indianapolis e poi alle 24 Ore di Le Mans, del Nurburgring e di Spa- Francorchamps. Un paio dei suoi 7 figli… Nelson Angelo "Nelsinho" e Pedro… hanno pure intrapreso la carriera di piloti nell'automobilismo sportivo.
