Tra le piacevoli e rotonde colline della Montagnola Senese, nel comune di Sovicille a circa 480 metri s.l.m. si trova il Romitorio di Cetinale, una struttura particolare in cui 12 eremiti vivevano in comune curando gli ammalati e assistendo i moribondi… Circondata da meravigliosi boschi di lecci e faggi tra panorami soavi e strade ben tenute circondate dai muretti a secco.

Un paesaggio che invita alla contemplazione ed alla pace interiore, tanto è vero che qui abbondavano i monasteri, e come spesso capitava, ad ogni monastero era collegato un romitorio, dove i confratelli portati verso l'ascesa potevano trovare la via della perfezione, isolandosi dal mondo.

Veduta dal romitorio

Il Romitorio fu edificato poco dopo la costruzione della villa, nel 1716. I monaci avevano particolari obblighi che li univano al signore di Cetinale come visitare la cappella della villa una volta al mese, servire la messa e fare a richiesta opere di carità. In cambio quando non avevano sufficienti offerte la villa forniva loro di che sostenersi.

La struttura si articola su quattro piani. Sul corpo centrale si aprono due logge sovrastate da una croce egizia. Ancora visibili sono alcune teste di santi.

Nel piccolo giardino di fronte alla facciata del Romitorio c'è un pozzo che serviva per attingere l'acqua.

Veduta dalla strada che porta alla parte superiore ed alla pieve di Pernina, il prossimo cammino.
