San Lorenzo, La Cattedrale di Viterbo non finisce mai di stupire, all'interno di questa suggestiva opera architettonica si trova la cappella dei Santi Valentino ed Ilario. Secondo la tradizione furono i primi ad evangelizzare la gente a Viterbo. Per la loro attività subirono però un feroce martirio durante la persecuzione di Diocleziano. Il primo che pensò ad una cappella, da erigersi all'interno della Cattedrale, fu il Vescovo Pietro. Il primo ricordo storico della cappella dei SS. Valentino ed Ilario risale al 1305. Da allora le teste dei Martiri vengono conservate in due reliquiari d'argento custoditi nella cappella. Nel corso degli anni la cappella è andata incontro a diversi interventi. Nel 1696, su disegno dell'architetto Contini (discepolo del Bernini), il Comune provvede alla costruzione dell'altare, ad opera di Giacomo Antonio Ferrari. L'elegante balaustra fu eseguita da Domenico Duranti, che fece pure il Ciborio ed il pavimento. Dal punto di vista artistico sono da notare i quattro Pennacchi triangolari che adornano la volta, e che rappresentano i quattro evangelisti. Le opere furono eseguite dal pittore Gian Maria Mari. Nel 1705 fu fatto il pavimento della Cappella con pietre di Monterazzano. Ad impreziosire maggiormente la cappella un grande quadro al di sopra dell'altare. Il Vescovo Sacchetti incaricò il pittore fiorentino Giovanni Maria Morandi di realizzare il quadro dei Santi Martiri che oggi è visibile sull'altare, opera eseguita nel 1697. Infine, i due dipinti laterali su tela, con il martirio di Valentino ed Ilario, sono opera del pittore milanese Francesco Ferdinandi detto Imperiali.
