Il Colosseo, o "Anphitheatrum Flavlum", fu costruito dall'Imperatore Vespasiano, nel 72 d.c. circa, come dono al popolo romano e inaugurato da suo figlio Tito nell'80 d.c. L'edificazione avvenne nell'area occupata dall'enorme palazzo di Nerone, la Domus Aurea, costruita dopo il grande incendio di Roma del 64. Nel 2007 è entrato a far parte dell'elenco aggiornato delle 7 meraviglie del mondo moderno, nonostante nei secoli abbia perso più di un pezzo per strada. Il Colosseo che vediamo oggi infatti non rappresenta che 1/3 della costruzione originaria. Ma nonostante questo non ha mai smesso di essere il simbolo della lunga e tumultuosa storia di Roma, che continua ad arricchire di mistero e curiosità. Al principio si chiamava Anfiteatro Flavio. Il nome "Colosseo" è arrivato solo nel medioevo: la teoria più accreditata è che si chiami così perché fu costruito nei pressi della statua del "colosso" di Nerone che sorgeva a pochi metri dall'anfiteatro. Altri dicono che derivi dalla posizione, perché sorgerebbe su un colle dove un tempo si trovava un tempio di Iside,ma c'è anche una leggenda nera secondo cui anticamente era un tempio pagano, dove si adorava il demonio. E alla fine di ogni cerimonia i sacerdoti chiedevano agli adepti: "Colis Eum?" ("Adori lui?"). Originariamente il Colosseo era interamente ricoperto di marmo, in seguito il marmo della facciata e di alcune parti interne fu utilizzato per la costruzione della Basilica di San Pietro e anche per edifici civili come Palazzo Barberini. Caduto in abbandono, per lungo tempo l'anfiteatro fu infatti usato come come fonte di materiali da costruzione. Così fino al 18esimo secolo, quando tornò l'amore per le antiche vestigia di Roma.
