La grande meridiana murale, che orna la facciata del Palazzo Conti gentili, è stata delineata nel 1867 dall'architetto Giuseppe Olivieri, sulla base di precisi calcoli astronomici compiuti dal padre gesuita Angelo Secchi. Grazie alla sua dettagliata costruzione grafica, questo orologio solare, consente di determinare, tramite l'ombra dello gnomone stellato, sia l'ora locale di Alatri (tempo vero), individuabile sui segmenti rettilinei, sia l'ora uffiziale dell'Osservatorio del Collegio Romano (tempo medio), evidenziata dalle lunghe figure a forma di otto. L'ora corrispondente (compresa tra le dieci antimeridiane e le quattro pomeridiane) è infine indicata dai numeri romani, posti su ciascuna terminazione delle sette direttrici orarie.
