Il mausoleo risale alla prima metà del quinto secolo con funzione di edificio funebre per la della sua committente, l'imperatrice Galla Placidia, sebbene non vi sia certezza di dati documentali. Secondo la tradizione l'imperatrice, figlia del reggente dell'Impero Romano d'Occidente, avrebbe fatto costruire questo mausoleo per sé, il marito e il fratello. Leggenda vuole che la splendida cupola con il suo cielo stellato, posta al suo interno, sia stata fonte d'ispirazione per il compositore Cole Porter per la creazione del brano Night and Day.
