Siamo giunti alla seconda tappa del percorso che ci condurrà alla cima del Monte Penna. Prima di entrare nel cuore del bosco caratterizzato dalla presenza di tante e grandi piante, dovremo attraversare un breve tratto terreno poco vegeto con molti grossi massi che fuoriescono dal terreno. La presenza di tanto sasso e grossi scogli è la peculiarità principale del Monte sacro della Verna, lo aveva ben notato Dante Alighieri già ad inizio '300, infatti definirà questo luogo nella sua Commedia "crudo sasso". Sassi e grossi massi che a volte sembrano sculture accompagneranno la nostra salita fino alla cima del Monte Penna, lasciando che le trame delle radici dei faggi disegnino uno scenario unico e affascinante. La Verna è qualcosa di straordinario, di unico. D'altronde si tratta di un grande macigno costituito non dalla consueta pietra arenaria, ma di roccia calcarea. Infatti, questo "crudo sasso" come lo definisce Dante Alighieri, è arrivato qui diversi milioni di anni fa dal profondo del mare e si è adagiato su una grande massa argillosa. Questa è la spiegazione per cui in questo monte di possono trovare conchiglie o altri fossili di origine marina.
Qui tutto sembra un miracolo, e questo è quanto deve aver percepito Francesco d'Assisi quando vi giunse la prima volta dopo averlo ricevuto in dono dal Conte Orlando di Chiusi nel 1213.

Sappiamo come il futuro santo vivesse in simbiosi con la natura, con gli animali, le piante. I monaci camaldolesi si dedicarono alla cura del bosco, nella filosofia francescana, invece, il bosco doveva rimanere spontaneo, come Dio l'aveva creato. Questo concetto è importante conoscerlo prima di affrontare una passeggiata sul e intorno al Sacro Monte. Qui maestose piante vegetano in uno straordinario e affascinante disordine, qualcosa d'inverosimile.

Maestosi faggi affondano le loro possenti radici tra la roccia, in certi casi abbracciano grandi massi e non si capisce da dove possano trarre la linfa vitale.

Alla Verna ci sono diversi itinerari in cui potersi cimentare. Due sono i più conosciuti e percorsi: l'Anello basso della Verna, un percorso intorno al monte, e l'Anello alto della Verna, la salita alla Penna, la cima del monte. Entrambi sono spettacolari per l'ambiente ci troveremo a percorrere. Un altro bel percorso è quello che attraversa il Bosco delle Fate, un incantato sentiero che da Chiusi della Verna sale al santuario. Accanto al crudo sasso francescano si trova il Monte Calcano. Si raggiunge in circa quaranta minuti si salita abbastanza impegnativa. La sua cima è un grande prato che offre un bel panorama dal Casentino alla Valtiberina
