Un insignificante container sperduto in mezzo al nulla, sospeso tra il bianco candido e l'immensità del cosmo, è il soggetto della foto che preferisco tra le decine di migliaia scattate in quest'ultimo quindicennio. C'è una rara aurora policroma, la Via Lattea che sbuca dal chiarore, diverse meteore che strisciano il cielo, la difficoltà nel scattarla a -95°C windchill in un contesto completamente al di fuori dalla realtà ordinaria, quello della Stazione Concordia. La stazione si trova sopra 3000 metri di ghiaccio e neve, nell'Altopiano Antartico, il luogo più estremo al mondo: 100 giorni di fila senza sole, temperatura che scende sotto i -80°C, carenza di ossigeno, aria secca, nessuna forma di vita. Durante il periodo invernale, che va da febbraio a novembre, la stazione è irraggiungibile: non possiamo ricevere alcun soccorso. Siamo le persone più isolate del pianeta (assieme ai 13 russi della base di Vostok), ancor più isolati degli astronauti a bordo della Stazione Spaziale Internazionale. Le condizioni di vita e ambientali sono analoghe a quelle di una missione interplanetaria di lunga durata, per questo motivo l'Agenzia Spaziale Europea sponsorizza vari progetti di ricerca, monitorandoci per capire come il corpo umano si adatta ad un ambiente simil-extraterrestre. Ecco il racconto della foto. Erano le 17:25, ho visto che fuori c'era un'intensa aurora e ho annullato la lezione di yoga. Siamo usciti in cinque e abbiamo camminato al buio per 400 metri, incespicando nelle sculture di neve create dal vento. Il freddo dei -95°C windchill si è fatto sentire e arrivati al container siamo rimasti al coperto per 5 minuti scaldando mani e piedi, poi nuovamente fuori. Mentre andavo a piazzare il treppiede sono caduto, la macchina fotografica è finita sulla neve. L'ho recuperata, cercato la giusta inquadratura, scattato e illuminato brevemente il primo piano con la lampada frontale. Siamo poi rientrati nel container e ho visto che c'era tantissima neve all'interno del paraluce, probabilmente a causa della caduta. Un terzo della lente era coperto e ho pensato che la foto fosse rovinata. Tornati in base l'ho guardata al PC notando con stupore che era perfetta: la scena più bella che abbia mai immortalato. La spedizione italo-francese nella Stazione Concordia è organizzata dal Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide (PNRA) e dell'Institut polaire français Paul-Émile Victor (IPEV).
