Il sasso spicco. . Usciti dalla Cappella della Maddalena si scende ancora, giungendo ad uno degli angoli più caratteristici della montagna, un insieme impressionante di rocce accatastate sulle quali si innalzano faggi secolari. Arrivati al fondo degli 89 gradini, che compongono la lunga scalinata, si è dentro un baratro orrido e umido. Un masso imponente sporge per vari metri sopra una robusta roccia. Sembra staccato e si erge solo per il contrappeso della parte che non si vede. La croce in legno addossata alla roccia ricorda come San Francesco in questo luogo amava meditare la Passione di Cristo. Infatti qui la natura, con le sue pietre spaccate, gli ricordava il momento tragico della morte del suo amato Gesù, quando, come dice il vangelo, forti terremoti si abbatterono sulla terra sconvolgendola. La nona parte del tour fotografico dedicata al santuario della Verna ci fa conoscere un'altro luogo di meditazione che San Francesco d'Assisi frequentava. Scesi nell'umido "baratro" del Sasso Spicco della Verna abbiamo un'altra chiara testimonianza dell'aspetto geologico di questo Sacro Monte Francescano. Si potrebbe definire un'enorme quantità di massi grandi e grandissimi scaricati casualmente sulla cima di un monte d'argilla.
Per l'incredibile scenografia che ci offre quest'ambiente, il Sasso Spicco è stato nei secoli oggetto di tante storie e leggende su come questo luogo si sia creato e su quell'enorme masso possa stare lì sospeso. In realtà nessun miracolo, solo un grande regalo delle forze immense che possiede la natura.

Veduta in andata

Se la parte di masso che sta sporgente sopra la nostra testa è molto grande, ben più enorme e pesante è la porzione di masso che sta dalla parte opposta e lo controbilancia. Questa spiegazione tecnica non deve togliere fascino a questo luogo, perché il miracolo grande è La Verna in se stessa, in tutto il suo ambiente. Si dice che San Francesco stesse a lungo sotto questo masso sporgente perché qui si sentiva particolarmente vicino alla Passione di Cristo.

I Fioretti di San Francesco ci raccontano che Gesù avesse rivelato al Poverello d'Assisi che le crepe e fratture sui grandi massi di questo ambiente si fossero verificate al momento della sua morte sulla croce.
Per questo motivo sembra che il Santo sostasse a lungo sotto questo masso sporgente dove si sentiva particolarmente vicino alla Passione di Cristo. La croce in legno qui presente vuol ricordare questo.

Dalla parte opposta alle scale c'è una grande spaccatura nel monte dove è incastrato un masso. Più in alto si vede una sorta di ponte, funge d'appoggio al Corridoio delle Stimmate che passa sopra.
