All'ingresso del santuario si apre un ampio piazzale lastricato detto il Quadrante, da cui è possibile accedere a tutti i luoghi visitabili del Santuario; circondato da un muro di pietra, deve il suo nome alla meridiana, l'orologio solare inciso sulla parete del campanile della Basilica. Nel piazzale è presente una grande croce lignea, infissa nella roccia, oltre la quale è possibile osservare il suggestivo panorama sulla valle del Casentino.

In questa veduta ho segnato il quadrante della meridiana che da il nome alla piazza.
A destra si trova il Pozzo della foresteria: si tratta di una cisterna del XVI secolo che veniva utilizzata per pellegrini e ospiti, un valido esempio di architettura spontanea, opera dei frati e delle varie maestranze che nel corso del tempo vi lavorarono.
Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli
A destra della Basilica è situata la più antica chiesa del complesso conventuale, dedicata a Santa Maria degli Angeli, costruita tra il 1216 ed il 1218 da san Francesco con l'aiuto del conte Orlando Cattani. L'edifico venne ristrutturato ed ampliato dopo il 1250 per volere del cardinale Rinaldo di Jenne dei Conti di Segni (futuro papa Alessandro IV) e di papa Innocenzo IV, ed ulteriormente modificato in seguito.
