La pratica della decontestualizzazione è abbondantemente presente nei movimenti artistici moderni come un vero e proprio meccanismo "poetico", essenziale alla costruzione dell'opera d'arte, che permette di estrapolare dal suo contesto un oggetto, snaturandolo e svuotandolo così del suo significato comune e conferendogli funzioni diverse ed incongrue. Talvolta all'operazione di estrapolazione e decontestualizzazione segue un riassemblaggio secondo una logica che risponde a precise esigenze creative, comunque l'intento di questo tipo di procedura è sempre quello di mettere l'osservatore nelle condizioni di valutare la realtà secondo un nuovo punto di vista, secondo una inusuale chiave di lettura, inducendolo a guardare con "nuovi occhi" anzichè cercare nuove vie.
