Grazie alle ghiandole che si trovano nei cuscinetti plantari delle zampe anteriori, sul muso e nella regione anale, emettono una secrezione odorosa che "marca" i confini dei loro territori. Talvolta, però, non basta a tenere lontane altre marmotte. Zuffe e inseguimenti sono il modo più convincente per spiegare agli intrusi che è ora di andarsene. Quando però ad avvicinarsi è un predatore la regola è fuggire. E per farlo in fretta, le marmotte hanno escogitato un sistema efficace: la prima che fiuta il pericolo dà l'allarme e in pochi secondi il gruppo si rifugia nella tana. La tecnica è semplice. La "sentinella" si alza ritta sulle zampe posteriori, nella posizione a candela, spalanca la bocca ed emette un grido simile a un fischio, provocato dall'espulsione di aria attraverso le corde vocali, che secondo gli studiosi è un vero linguaggio.
