La Welwitsha è una pianta del deserto del Namib, famosa per la sua longevità, che si trova prevalentemente nella Namibia occidentale ed è raffigurata nello stemma nazionale. Si è adattata alle condizioni più estreme e cresce molto lentamente. Alcuni esemplari arrivano fino a 2000 anni di età tanto da essere definiti "fossili viventi"
