Il castello di Herrenchiemsee è stato fatto costruire alla fine del 1800 dal re Ludwing, profondo ammiratore del Re Sole. Questo interesse non nasce solo da un ideale storico, ma anche per una sorta di collegamento “familiare”. Difatti, il re francese era stato il padrino di battesimo del nonno di Ludwig, il Re Ludwig I di Baviera. Dato questo legame affettivo il Re ha deciso di realizzare il castello di Herrenchiemsee identico a quella della reggia di Versailles. Ma il castello non è stato portato a termine perché il Re Ludwig, è morto in circostanze particolarmente sospettose. Infatti, è stato ritrovato il 13 giugno 1886 nel lago di Starnberg.

Il castello oggi si presenta con la sola facciata centrale. Ed è stato realizzato in una posizione splendida. Il castello, infatti, sorge in un'isola del lago Chiemsee, la Herreninsel. Herrenchiemsee si traduce in Isola degli Uomini, perché ospitava il convento dei Canonici Agostiniani, in opposizione alla vicina Isola delle Donne, Fraueninsel. L'isola si può raggiungere con un traghetto che parte dal paese di Prien.

All'interno del castello, in alcune delle sue sale, è stato allestito il Museo di Re Ludwig II. In queste sale troviamo fotografie, dipinti, lettere, oggetti personali e arredi originali, molti dei quali provenienti dalla Residenza di Monaco del monarca. (da Mondo Viaggiare)
