1600 circa: un alba qualsiasi sul vecchio molo del porticciolo di De Cocksdorp in attesa del naviglio leggero olandese che porta rifornimenti e persone sull'isola di Texel ed imabarca gli splendidi bulbi di tulipano coltivati sull'isola e i prodotti agricoli. L'Olanda in quell'epoca è già la potenza commerciale e marittima di tutta l'Europa e possiede un enorme flotta leggera e pesante. Nel secolo XVII° la cantieristica olandese fu chiamata a sviluppare, per varie cause contingenti, la costruzione di navi con soluzioni che si discostavano dalle abituali forme vigenti a quei tempi. Forme diverse e insolite, che in seguito favorì e influenzò un andar per mare che oggi viene definito “Yachting” e cioè navigare per sport o per piacere. La geografia dell'Olanda ha, a nord, un grande bacino riparato dal forte moto ondoso del Mare del Nord chiamato ora Ijlsselmeer dove si trovavano i porti di Aasterdam, Hoorn ed Enkvizen; e a sud moltissimi fiumi e, un po' sparsi, anche laghi e con coste marine dai bassi fondali Tutto ciò aveva però un grande svantaggio: la poca profondità di queste acque. La cantieristica navale obbligò gli architetti ad escogitare nuove forme per le loro navi, con poca immersione, in modo da poter rendere il trasporto, anche fluviale, molto più esteso e conveniente. E' per questi motivi che le navi Olandesi hanno quelle forme che le caratterizzano e le differenziano sostanzialmente da tutto il naviglio che si produsse nel resto dell'intera Europa. Le barche olandesi avevano la caratteristica di una grande pienezza delle forme, specialmente nella parte prodiera, e poppiera, tonde ed dl basso pescaggio. Le murate molto arrotondate all'interno e conseguentemente cassero e casseretto molto stretti .Altra caratteristica, questa dovuta principalmente a motivi economici, era la poca larghezza dei ponti perchè nei primi anni del secolo i noli nei porti si basavano sulle misure di questi ultimi.
