La prima denominazione del Ponte Sant'Angelo fu "ponte Elio", dall'imperatore Publio Elio Adriano che lo fece costruire tra il 130 ed il 135 d.C. dall'architetto Demetriano e realizzato come viale d'accesso al Mausoleo di Adriano. Durante il Medioevo il nome fu mutato in "ponte S.Pietro" in quanto rappresentava l'unico accesso diretto per giungere alla Basilica Vaticana dalla città. Il nome attuale si ricollega alla tradizione secondo la quale, nel 590 d.C., mentre papa Gregorio Magno attraversava il ponte durante una processione penitenziale, ebbe la visione dell'arcangelo Michele che, sulla sommità della Mole Adriana, riponeva nel fodero la spada a significare la fine della pestilenza che affliggeva Roma. Da allora la denominazione "S.Angelo" si estese al ponte ed al Castello, sui cui spalti venne innalzato il famoso angelo a ricordo dell'avvenimento. In memoria di un incidente provocato da cavalli imbizzarriti e verificatosi durante il Giubileo del 1450, quando circa 200 pellegrini morirono accalcandosi sul ponte mentre defluivano dal Vaticano dopo aver visto il velo della Veronica, Niccolò V fece innalzare sul ponte due piccole cappelle espiatorie dedicate a "S.Maria Maddalena" ed ai "Ss.Innocenti". Per molti anni ponte S.Angelo divenne luogo di esecuzione della pena capitale e di esposizione dei corpi dei condannati a morte. La prima esposizione risale all'anno santo del 1500 e si tramanda che ben 18 impiccati furono appesi sul ponte, nove per ogni ingresso. Negli anni seguenti furono talmente numerose le impiccagioni che in seno al popolo nacque il commento proverbiale: "Ce sò più teste mozze su le spallette che meloni al mercato". Nel 1533 Clemente VII ordinò la demolizione delle cappelline, malridotte durante il Sacco di Roma, facendole sostituire con le attuali statue di "S.Paolo" e "S.Pietro" (nella foto 1 la statua di S.Paolo), opere rispettivamente di Paolo Taccone e del Lorenzetto. Nel 1536, in occasione della venuta a Roma dell'imperatore Carlo V di Spagna, Paolo III affidò a Raffaello da Montelupo l'incarico di ornare il ponte con otto statue di stucco (ben presto andate in rovina) raffiguranti i quattro evangelisti ed i quattro patriarchi. Un restauro generale del ponte fu curato dal Bernini per volontà di Clemente IX negli anni 1668-1669. I parapetti chiusi furono sostituiti da balaustrate di pietra e cancellate di ferro, mentre alle due statue già esistenti ne vennero affiancate altre dieci, rappresentanti angeli con i simboli della Passione. Due di essi, quelli col "cartiglio" e con la "corona di spine", scolpiti in marmo dallo stesso Bernini, considerati troppo belli per essere esposti alle intemperie sul ponte, vennero sostituiti da copie di bottega, mentre gli originali restarono in proprietà degli eredi Bernini fino al 1729, quando vennero donati alla chiesa di S.Andrea delle Fratte, dove ancora oggi si possono ammirare.
