La Bugatti Automobiles venne fondata a Molsheim in Francia nel 1909 da Ettore Isidoro Arco Bugatti… milanese di nascita e francese di adozione… e fu attiva in questo stabilimento fino al 1963. Il modello denominato Type 44 venne costruito dal 1927 al 1930 per un totale di circa 1000 esemplari nelle versioni Berlina, Cabriolet, Coupé e Roadster: quest'ultima versione è quella visibile nella fotografia. La vettura era dotata di un motore aspirato con 8 cilindri in linea di 2991 cm3 che erogando 80 cavalli di potenza le faceva superare i 140 chilometri orari di velocità massima. Dal 1987 al 1995 il marchio Bugatti divenne poi dell'imprenditore Romano Artioli (costui fu anche proprietario della Lotus dal 1993 al 1998) che aprì uno stabilimento a Campogalliano… in provincia di Modena… denominato Bugatti Automobili S.p.a. dopodiché dal 1998 il marchio Bugatti Automobiles entrò a far parte del Gruppo Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft che riportò la produzione a Molsheim… in Francia… dopo aver ristrutturato ed ammodernato lo storico stabilimento aperto dal suo fondatore… il progettista Ettore Bugatti.
