1/250 f/9.0, ISO 200, Istanbul, Turkey.

In 532, short after the infamous Nika Revolt, emperor Justinian ordered a replacement on a scale never seen before for the destroyed great basilica of Constantinople. Stones, marbles, columns ... were brought from the provinces of the vast empire and 10000 workers were divided into two groups in order to compete and thus finish quickly the construction of the building's east and west half. Justinian was inspecting closely the progression and on 27 December 537, less than 6 years later took place the inauguration. The enormous church was of phenomenal and unparalleled beauty. The interior was richly adorned, "full of light and sunshine". "It is as if one were stepping into heaven itself with no one standing in the way at any point; one is illuminated and struck by the various beauties that shine forth like stars all around. Then everything else seems to be in ecstasy and the church itself seems to whirl around".
