La vipera dei walser (Vipera walser) è una nuova specie aggiunta da pochi anni alla lista delle 4 specie del genere Vipera presenti in Italia. Da sempre confusa con Vipera berus, sia per caratteri morfologici che etologici,occupa alcune porzioni circoscritte del Piemonte. Recenti studi genetici hanno confermato i dubbi riguardo ai caratteri particolari degli esemplari osservati (es. folidosi, apice e lunghezza del muso). Predilige zone di pascolo e porzioni di bosco soleggiate ed è spesso associata alle aree cespugliate in particolare composte da Rhododendron ferrugineum, Erica sp. e Anlnus viridis, come il marasso mostra una particolare predilezione per ambienti freschi e sembra essere una specie igrofita. Particolarmente minacciata per via dell'habitat circoscritto e per le catture da parte di bracconieri e collezionisti che la ricercano per la sua unicità.
