Mercoledì 23 Febbraio 1887 una violenta scossa di terremoto colpì l' entroterra sanremese, danneggiando gravemente l' abitato di Bussana. Numerose abitazioni, sorte intorno al castello subirono danni gravissimi. Fra gli edifici più colpiti ci furono l'antico castello (peraltro già in rovina al momento del sisma) e la chiesa di S. Maria delle Grazie (poi di S.Egidio), costruita nel 1652 in stile barocco al posto di un precedente edificio medievale esistente già alla fine del XIV secolo. I superstiti, dopo aver vissuto per anni in abitazioni di fortuna, abbandonarono il borgo e il comune di Sanremo chiuse ogni accesso al paese.
