Portrait of an elderly potter (Nepal). La foto è stata scattata circa un anno fa in Nepal e più esattamente nella Pottery Square di Bhaktapur. Come mia consuetudine mi sono recato sul posto molto presto per osservare e vivere il più possibile l'atmosfera originale del luogo. Vicino all'ingresso di una delle storiche botteghe con affaccio diretto sulla piazza, ho incontrato questo umile e simpatico vasaio che, oramai quasi ottantenne, stava osservando lo svolgere di quelle stesse azioni quotidiane che lui stesso ha svolto fino a qualche anno fa in prima persona per molti decenni. Con il supporto della traduzione di uno dei figli, l'arzillo anziano (in Nepal come in molti altri paesi asiatici il termine "anziano" è più comunemente utilizzato come sostantivo che come aggettivo ad evidenziare il rispetto che viene riconosciuto a queste persone d'esperienza...) mi ha raccontato che, sin da bambino ha cominciato a partecipare all'attività di famiglia con piccoli lavori di supporto. Trasferito successivamente da ragazzo a lavori più faticosi (come ad esempio lo spostamento dei pani di argilla), ha finalmente potuto mettere mano al tornio da vasaio intorno alla maggior età. Oggi, dopo quasi 50 anni di attività, ha cessato la sua attività produttiva ma il suo luogo preferito continue a rimane Pottery Square, dove lavora la sua famiglia e dove vivono ancora forti i suoi ricordi. A questo punto mi è venuto spontaneo chiedergli se avesse voglia di mostrarmi in prima persona il processo di creazione di un vaso con l'utilizzo del tornio. Dall'espressione ritratta in questa fotografia credo sia piuttosto evidente che nessun'altra richiesta avrebbe potuto farlo più felice. Organizzando viaggi di avventura per fotografi, mi capita spesso di ritornare in luoghi che ho già visitato. Ho imparato quindi a portare con me una serie di stampe che regalo alle stesse che ho avuto modo di fotografare durante la mia precedente visita. Questo anziano vasaio è una di queste persone.
