Il toponimo di Vigolo Marchese fa riferimento al nome del fondatore Vicolo di Uberto marchese d'Orta che fondò (1008) il complesso monastero-ospitale-chiesa con torre campanaria del 1310, accanto al battistero che si ritiene preesistente e contenente le spoglie di Sant'Ippolito, donate dal fondatore Uberto d'Orta. Però non è chiaro se fosse un Battistero oppure un modello della chiesa della resurrezione di Gerusalemme, essendo il complesso situato sulla via francigena. La chiesa, romanica, ha orientamento Est-Ovest, preceduta da un sagrato in acciottolato. La facciata è a salienti, tripartita e chiusa da contrafforti. La parte inferiore della facciata mostra al centro un portale ad arco. La parte superiore della facciata, al centro e ai lati è decorata con lesene che terminano con archetti. Tra le lesene centrali si aprono due monofore, sormontate da una cornice ad archetti pensili.
