Non mi è mai capitato prima di vedere l'ingresso al centro storico di Sirmione senza anima viva, verso le otto di sera. In centro bastava smettere di camminare per non sentire assolutamente alcun rumore, alcuna luce, alcun turista o rumore di pentola. Pareva di essere in una città abbandonata, seppur curata. Un'emozione in chiaroscuro, comunque a me indimenticabile. Ho incontrato solamente un gatto bianco, che miagolava affettuoso. Mi ha seguito dolcemente per un po'. Mi sono freschi nella memoria tutti quei momenti in cui il vociare ad ogni ora in quel luogo era assordante, in cui un tedesco mangiava per strada del cibo cinese e in cui una famiglia russa cercava di comprare un gelato senza spiaccicare una parola d'inglese o di italiano. E ancora: i "cinghialoni" che passavano dal centro a dorso nudo a fianco di borse di Gucci e Rolex accecanti. L'odore pervasivo delle terme è tuttavia rimasto: forse l'unica costante che accomuna questa desolazione agli antichi e futuri fasti turistici della "perla delle isole e delle penisole".
