La Ferrari Dino 246 porta il nome del figlio di Enzo Ferrari... Alfredo detto "Dino"... che scomparve a soli 24 anni nel 1956 a causa della distrofia muscolare di cui era ammalato. La versione GTS quì visibile... fu definita Spider... ma in realtà era una versione Targa in quanto solo la parte superiore del tettuccio era asportabile. Venne immessa sul mercato nel 1972 in concomitanza con la versione Berlinetta Coupé GT 3° Serie. Era dotata di un motore V6 a 65° sito in posizione centrale longitudinale di 1986 cm3 che erogando 180 cavalli di potenza portava la vettura a 230 chilometri di velocità massima. Mentre il telaio di tipo tubolare era in acciaio la carrozzeria... che era stata progettata da Aldo Brovarone designer presso la Pninfarina... era invece in alluminio ed era costruita dalla Carrozzeria del designer Sergio Scaglietti sita a Maranello (Mo). Mentre comunemente la vettura viene definita Ferrari Dino... il suo marchio automobilistico è solamente Dino... come anche risulta dal logo posto sopra al cofano anteriore... in quanto con tale nome nel 1965 venne fondata un'azienda... da un comune accordo tra la Ferrari e la Fiat... per la produzione di automobili e che rimarrà attiva fino al 1980. La differenza principale che distingue le vetture è che quelle prodotte per la Fiat hanno il motore posizionato anteriormente... mentre quelle assemblate per la Ferrari hanno il propulsore in posizione centrale posteriore: ispirandosi a questi ultimi modelli vedrà poi la luce la leggendaria Lancia Stratos. Precedentemente alla produzione stradale vennero prodotte dalla Ferrari alcune vetture denominate Dino che gareggiarono in Formula 2 ed altre prodotte insieme alla Fiat che parteciparono a gare nella categoria riservata alle Sport Prototipi.
