Il melanismo per quanto riguarda le vipere rappresenta un meccanismo evolutivo, i soggetti con livrea nera infatti occupano prevalentemente le regioni alpine ricche di precipitazioni e dal clima rigido, poichè necessitano di accumulare più rapidamente l'energia prodotta dai raggi solari, anche nelle giornate uggiose. Questo spiega l'abbondanza di questi esemplari all'interno delle popolazioni alpine, dove in certe stazioni rappresentano anche il 50% degli esemplari osservati. Il colore nero permette infatti di attirare più rapidamente l'energia solare riducendo i tempi di esposizione. Spesso mi è capitato in giornate umide e fredde di osservare comunque questi individui termoregolarsi all'aperto, mentre gli individui con livrea "normale" restavano all'interno dei loro rifugi. In questa immagine si può osservare un maschio mentre si espone in una pietraia a 1290m con leggera pioggia e 12°C di temperatura.
