Il processo di muta, detto anche ecdisi, fa parte del ciclo biologico delle vipere e dei rettili in generale. La muta avviene generalmente in periodi particolari dell'anno, la prima muta di una vipera avviene pochi minuti dopo la nascita, appena partoriti i neonati abbandonano immediatamente la vecchia pelle (esuvia). La prima muta dell'anno invece avviene qualche giorno dopo il risveglio primaverile, la seconda e la terza generalmente nei mesi estivi di giugno, luglio e agosto, ovviamente questi periodi possono variare in base alla quota e alla latitudine. Durante la muta le vipere tendono ad esporsi maggiormente, anche nelle giornate uggiose e fredde cercando di accumulare una grande quantità di raggi solari. Il processo di muta dura circa 7-10 giorni, ma il tempo varia in base alle condizioni climatiche. In questa fase le vipere possono essere più vulnerabili in particolare la vista si fa più offuscata per via di un liquido particolare che separa l'occhio dalla vecchia pelle. In questa immagine si può osservare il colore bluastro particolare che ricopre l'occhio pochi giorni dopo l'inizio della fase di muta, questo tenderà a sparire prima che la vipera abbandoni l'esuvia.
