Il melanotismo è un fenomeno abbastanza frequente in Vipera aspis ssp. aspis in particolare lungo la catena alpina, in certe popolazioni non è raro incontrare esemplari con livrea nera e accenni di colore rossastro-arancione nelle squame labiali, alcuni autori definiscono questa particolare colorazione "infernalis", generalmente questi individui detti melanotici presentano l'iride scuro per lo più nero, in questa immagine viene ritratta una femmina con "l'occhio infuocato" particolare piuttosto raro da osservare
