Il morso delle vipere rappresenta una risorsa fondamentale per la loro sopravvivenza, questo consente infatti di inoculare, tramite i denti canalicolati, il veleno nelle prede, talvolta però se minacciate possono reagire mordendo eventuali aggressori, le vipere tendono sempre a fuggire di fronte a potenziali minacce tuttavia se messe alle strette, afferrate o calpestate reagiscono mordendo. Studi recenti hanno dimostrato che in circa il 30% dei casi le vipere utilizzano morsi a secco ovvero senza l'impiego del veleno, questi animali infatti sono in grado di controllare la fuoriuscita del veleno contenuto nelle apposite ghiandole velenifere, questo permette di non sprecare veleno necessario alla predazione .
