La Chiesa di Santa Maria ad Cryptas, a Fossa (Aq) rappresenta un vero e proprio caposaldo dell' arte medievale abruzzese abbracciando ben tre secoli di storia, ed è pertanto un vero e proprio museo di immagini figurative. Ma l'assoluta particolarità di Santa Maria ad Cryptas risiede nei due distinti cicli d'affreschi che ne ricoprono interamente l'interno. Il primo ciclo opera di artisti bizantino-cassinesi nell'abside, nella parete meridionale, nell'arco trionfale e nella parete di contro-facciata, il secondo ad opera di pittori di scuola toscana di gusto protogiottesco , che riaffrescarono la parete settentrionale riedificata in seguito al terremoto del 1313.
