Pinacoteca di Brera "In quest'opera Boccioni affronta in chiave eroica uno dei suoi temi prediletti: la città che si espande e avanza, qui simbolicamente rappresentata dalla figura del cavallo che in una corsa inarrestabile travolge chiunque tenti di fermarlo. Il dipinto ebbe una gestazione lunga e complicata, e originariamente intitolato "Il lavoro", avrebbe dovuto far parte di un trittico. L'artista nel 1910 scriveva di aver cercato "una gran sintesi del lavoro, della luce e del movimento" e che il dipinto era stato eseguito senza modello e che tutte le abilità del mestiere erano state sacrificate alla ragione ultima dell'emozione".
